Deja-Vu?

The House of Lords Select Committee on the Constitution has just published its report on the Parliamentary Standards Bill.

"We are particularly concerned by the hasty manner in which policy-making has taken place, with negligible public consultation, and the subsequent ‘fast-tracking’ through Parliament of a bill which will have major constitutional implications."

"The way policy-making has been rushed, the lack of public consultation and the limited opportunities given to Parliament to scrutinise the bill all, in our view, fail to meet the minimum requirements of constitutional acceptability."

"This is no way in which to legislate on matters which raise complex constitutional and legal issues."

Criticising the way in which this Bill has been presented, being rushed through Parliament with little or no debate, or consultation - especially with the public - reminds one of another such episode.*

*Hint: Treaty of Lisbon?
