Politicians, Principles & Cameron

Richard North, EU Referendum, posts on a story which appears in the Daily Express about a poll of 240 Conservative candidates best placed to win seats at the forthcoming general election and the fact that most placed climate change as their lowest priority.

It is no wonder that Conservative HQ has felt the need to 're-educate' some of their candidates - one can only presume lesson number one was: listen you idiots, matters environmental are an EU competence - they legislate, we just have to go along with it! Lesson number two was probably: now this is how we present all these policies as our idea......rule number 1 in presentation is: don't mention the EU!

Richard also picks up on a very important point about our democracy when he says: "When promotion beckons, and the ministerial car awaits, principles tend to go out of the window". Which sort of makes a mockery of all the protestations that candidates make about only wishing to serve the people and country! (Round things!)

Yet another 'deficit' in our democracy is the statement of Cameron, on climate change, to which Richard refers: "A very small number of people take a different view on the science, but the policy is driven by me, and that is the way it is going to be". Note the words 'but the policy is driven by me and that is the way it is going to be'. If that is not a form of 'dictatorship', in what is supposed to be a democratic process, then heaven help us! The only reason that the policy is 'driven' by him is that he is constrained by Britain's membership of the European Union and their governance of our country - but Cameron would never admit that. So much for honesty in politics!

Added to the previous point about 'dictatorship', some Conservative candidates appear unwilling to sign the Albion Alliance pledge due to their fear of deselection for not following the 'party line'. As has been asked previously on this blog - does country not come before party? Silly question really, when one looks at the direction Cameron is taking the country and the slavish attitude exhibited by the majority of his candidates.

One cannot also but wonder about the political will to 'reform' parliament, make it more transparent, etc etc, when, at the end of the day, all those inhabiting it are robotic, unprincipled, idiots!
